Ken McArthur Interviews Mark Boersma

Is Mark Boersma Arrogant?

Last week I was listening quietly from the back of the room as Mark Boersma was doing some very directed coaching when I heard him repeat a question that he asks at least daily and probably hourly.

“On a scale of 1 to 10 how direct would you like me to be with you today?” – Mark Boersma

In almost every case, the person hesitates – taken back by the question – and then says, “Ten.”

At least they do that until they’ve heard the results of giving that response a few times – then they might just hedge their bets with a safer 7 or 8.

My guess is Mark Boersma may be thinking what Jack Nicholson actually says in “A Few Good Men”  …

I’ve heard Mark ask the question over and over and on his personal scale, it would be VERY rare for him to deliver a ten, because when he returns a three, people believe they’ve just been hit with a ten.

I’m not sure that Mark thinks that you can handle a ten.

But, I think we ALL can …

Right up until the time we have to DO SOMETHING about it.

So ….

On a scale of 1 to 10 how direct would you like me to be with you today?”

I’m going to guess you really want a ten — even if you are hesitating — and I’m going to give it to you.

You can live it, understand it or toss it out – that much is up to you.

First there are a few basics that are important to understand what I am trying to embed in your mind and heart today.

Basic One: We love confident people

If you want to lead, you must be confident because people don’t want to follow people who don’t know where they are going. – Mark Boersma is definitely confident.

Basic Two: Confidence Breeds Authority

If you act confidently people will assume that you are an authority. LOTS of people accept without question that Mark Boersma is an outstanding authority.

Basic Three: Authority Breeds Arrogance

The more true authority we collect the more we are prone to move into arrogance.  This is where it starts getting tricky.  What does Mark do that indicates that he is an authority and what actions might make you think that he could be arrogant?

Basic Four: We Hate Arrogance

I’ve seen crowds turn vicious when presented with an arrogant person.  In fact, it becomes almost a righteous anger the crowd conjures up in an almost instant response to arrogance.  I’m pretty sure that Mark doesn’t want to be arrogant and wouldn’t like the response if a crowd thought he was.

Basic Five: We Say We Want the Truth, but The Truth is Not Enough

Just like you and me Mark would love to tell the truth, but …

It’s not enough to know that there is evil in everyone, that every person is flawed, that we are often petty and cruel or that bad things happen to good people.

All of those things are TRUE, but by themselves, just repeating those FACTS, doesn’t make the world a better place.

In order to USE the truth to make things better, we should look at the possibilities not the limitations, the strengths as well as the weaknesses and the good as well as the bad.

Tearing people down does not make people strong, but helping them see the truth can.

All too often arrogance accompanies strength, and we must never assume that justice is on the side of the strong. The use of power must always be accompanied by moral choice.

I’m guessing that some people might take a look at Mark’s truth telling and confidence and read arrogance.

In fact, I’m more than guessing because I’ve heard people tell me how arrogant he is.

So you may not like Mark Boerma …

When I started working with Mark he told me that we might find it difficult to work together.

Mark wants to be a very direct person, because he finds that it moves things forward quickly. After all if you don’t have to get bogged down in the extra baggage that we all carry around, things can happen at light-speed.

If you just say the truth then you will quickly discover what works and what doesn’t, you can identify the people that you will have success with quickly and everyone can get onto making that happen.

That could hurt a few feelings on the way.

As it turns out, I really like direct people and Mark and I get along just fine.  We move quickly together and we both like that, but here is the truth …

Some people should not work with Mark …

In fact, Mark doesn’t WANT to work with everyone, because he doesn’t believe that he can help everyone.

  • So if you are easily intimidated or can’t handle the truth, don’t work with Mark.
  • If you aren’t serious about what you are trying to accomplish, don’t work with Mark.
  • If you don’t value your time — or Mark’s — don’t work with Mark.

But ….

  • If you love people who are direct
  • If you want to learn from someone who thinks at a level three moves ahead of you.
  • If you crave change and challenge
  • If you dream of becoming more than you are
  • If you want to move at light-speed
  • If you want success beyond measure

You might want to spend some time with Mark.

Luckily, that’s DEAD EASY and instead of judging with second hand information, you can judge for yourself.
